Auto-Catalog Site News
As you may have heard, Borders is closing its web site by the
end of July. Amazon will be taking over the Borders web site.
The big question is what will happen to the Borders database?
I hope it will stay around as I have found it to be one of
the more accurate databases and certainly one of the biggest.
But I think the chances are it will disappear when Borders.com
closes its doors. So make the most of it while it is still around.
Readerware will continue to provide access to the Borders database
as long as possible.
There is good news for ReaderwareVW users though. The latest version adds
a number of new sites including Tower Records and Sam Goody. The Tower
Records database in particular is excellent, providing a lot of detailed information
about movies that few other sites provide. So checkout the new sites
added to ReaderwareVW.
A lot of ReaderwareVW users have asked why it doesn't support Amazon?
It helps to understand how Readerware auto-catalog works. It needs
a unique way to identify an item and then have access to databases
that support a search on this unique key. For books it is
fairly easy. All books since 1970 or so have had a unique ISBN and
virtually all bookstores support an ISBN search.
With videos and CDs it is not so easy. There is no universal numbering
system. Most new releases though include a barcode. The problem
is that not all sites support a barcode or UPC search. Amazon is
one site that does not, there is no way to search the Amazon database
using a UPC. The good news though is that more and more sites do and
as I find new sites with a UPC search I can add them to Readerware.
If you are an Amazon user and would like to see them support a UPC
search, I would encourage you to contact Amazon customer support
and let them know. Borders does support a UPC search and as Amazon
is taking over the Borders site, this would be a good time to let them
know.
