The Readerware Newsletter

Welcome to the Readerware newsletter.

Readerware 2.0 Now Shipping!!

Readerware 2.0 is now shipping, you can download it from the web site. I went through the feature list in detail two newsletters ago, so just a quick run through for the new subscribers:

New Wizards to guide you step by step through Readerware auto-catalog, import and export.

Readerware now has 3 customizable view types, the table view, the tree view and the fish eye view. You can create as many instances of each view as you want, customize each one to display the data you need, in the order you need it.

Expanded database with a number of new fields, plus you can define your own.

Search enhancements, you no longer need to use wild cards, the search is no longer case sensitive. Plus there is a new browse button in the toolbar to quickly display your entire database.

Auto-catalog enhancements, new graphical display indicates immediately whether or not a book was found.

New help engine, Readerware help now has a table of contents, index, a full text search and you can print it out. Plus all the new 2.0 features are now fully documented.

Reports are now a lot more customizable and easier to configure, you define a report by defining a view, drag columns around to layout your report etc.

New Readerware Client/Server Edition, supports multiple user access to the Readerware database, so now the whole family, your employees, everybody can start cataloging.

New database backup, quickly backup your entire database to a single zip file for easy archiving.

Database statistics to display the total value of your collection etc.

And more...

You can find more about 2.0 on the web site:

And in the interests of full disclosure, there is a charge for this upgrade unless you ordered in the last two months, in which the download version is free. There are also special prices available for upgrading to Readerware Client/Server Edition. Again, full details are on the web site:

Finally before we move on from the new 2.0 release, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the recent beta. You all helped get rid of those last few bugs and I got plenty of great feedback so more enhancements are in the works.

The Qode® and The Cat

In the last newsletter I reviewed the Qode key chain bar code reader. Overall, it is a very good device for use with Readerware auto-catalog. My one main gripe was that it was difficult to use multiple bar code readers on a system. The Qode is great for auto-catalog use, but I also want a bar code reader for single scans. I tried a number of ways to connect the Qode and my CCD gun scanner up, none of them worked.

However someone recently posted in the message forums that they were able to connect both the Qode® and a CueCat® to the same system. Following his instructions, I was able to get it to work also.

The Qode plugs into the computer keyboard port, the CueCat plugs into the Qode docking station and the keyboard plugs into the socket on the CueCat tail. Both scanners seem to work just fine like this.

Is it safe to connect 3 devices at once, all drawing power from the computer's keyboard port? Beats me, but it does seem to work and I have noticed no ill effects on my system. And it is a very useful configuration. The Qode is great for cataloging a bunch of books, you take it to your books rather than drag the books to your computer. The CueCat is great for single scans, like when you bring a new book home from the bookstore and want to catalog it.

You can find more information on the web site:

After all the work getting 2.0 ready, I feel like taking a break, but your feedback is still welcome. Please send in your comments. E-Mail feedback@readerware.com.
