What's up?

Readerware 3.0It has been a while since the last issue of the Readerware Newsletter, what has been going on?

A lot!

All efforts have been focused on Readerware 3.0. This is a major upgrade to Readerware with a lot of new features and functionality that you have asked for. It is taking longer than anticipated and I apologize for the delay, but the light is visible at the end of the tunnel :-)

The features you asked for are in and the finishing touches are being applied prior to starting our in house QA cycle.

Readerware 3.0 is more than just an upgrade though. The basic foundations of the product have been rewritten giving us a robust base to build on in forthcoming releases.

Because of the extent of the changes in Readerware 3.0 we will be launching a beta program for those interested in testing the new functionality and providing feedback on the product prior to general release. There will be a beta announcement shortly, keep an eye out for the next newsletter if you want to participate in the beta program.

Beginning with the beta announcement we will also start a series of newsletter articles that discuss each new feature in depth one at a time so that you can get a good feel for what is coming and what it will mean for you.

Once Readerware 3.0 is out Readerware will return to a more frequent update schedule and rest assured you will not have to wait this long for Readerware 4.0!

The Readerware knowledge base

Readerware Knowledge Base

Readerware has added a new knowledge base system to the web site. Here you will find all sorts of Readerware information, technical, sales, frequently asked questions, additional resources like report writer templates etc., all categorized with full search capabilities. You can browse the knowledge base by category or search for answers.

The Readerware knowledge base is always just a click away, look for the Knowledge base/FAQ link in the navigation panel on every page on the web site.

The knowledge base is constantly being updated with new articles and information so you will always find the latest Readerware information there.

There is also a lot of functionality built in to the new Readerware knowledge base system for you to explore. If there are knowledge base articles that you refer to a lot you can mark them as favorites and then they are easily accessible on your Favorites page. You can e-mail articles, print articles even save them as PDF files for offline viewing and printing. You can provide feedback by rating articles. There are RSS feeds available so that you can be notified about article changes etc.

Other things to check out in the knowledge base include the report writer templates section. You will find the templates in the Printing category. There are a number of new templates for printing and viewing thumbnails as well as the new PDA optimized templates discussed in the next article.

If you can't find an answer to your question or have suggestions on how to improve the knowledge base, please contact support@readerware.com.

The new Readerware knowledge base replaces the old forums. We believe the knowledge base will provide a much better solution for Readerware users, up to date accurate information, better organization with full search capabilities.

We hope the knowledge base will become your first source for Readerware information but it does not replace Readerware support. Prompt support is always available via e-mail. support@readerware.com.

Taking Readerware with you

Readerware Mobile Display

As you probably know Readerware has been available for Palm OS devices and iPods for a long time. You can take your databases with you wherever you go. You can search and browse your database in stores for example and avoid duplicate purchases.

Readerware 3.0 adds additional mobile platform support.

But what about taking your databases with you now on new devices like the iPhone or iPod Touch and other smart phones and PDAs? New report writer templates are available which can create an indexed  HTML file customized for small screen devices. You can use them on an iPhone, iPod Touch or any device capable of displaying HTML files. As they are indexed you can easily jump to the sections you want and browse your database.

Because Apple do not let you mount an iPhone or iPod Touch directly to your Mac or PC, users of these devices do need third party software to transfer and view these files. The excellent Air Sharing application available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X will let you easily transfer and view your Readerware database files on either device.

The templates are available for download from the Readerware Knowledge Base. You can use them as is or customize the templates to meet your needs.

It is a simple process to create your mobile Readerware database file, there is a knowledge base article that steps you through it.

Follow the links below to download the templates and learn more about using Readerware on virtually any mobile device.

Taking Readerware with you - Part II

Readerware Bookstore Report

Today everybody has a smart phone, PDA or iPod that they carry with them everywhere right?

Well, maybe not everybody.

Did you know that Readerware has a simple way to take your database with you, no fancy electronics required!

Readerware has a powerful built in reporting facility. You can print the results of a search in a number of different formats. You can create an especially useful report for taking on your trips to your local bookstores.

Create a table view with just a few columns, the ones you need like author, title, format, first edition etc. Keep the columns as narrow as possible. When printing this report, select a small font, say an 8 point font. Check the Two Sided and Break on Author options. Adjust the Tables on Page slider to meet your  preferences, the goal is to get as many columns as possible on the page. Try experimenting with portrait and landscape modes. This will list the maximum number of titles per page. Depending on the font size you select you can get well over a hundred titles on a single page, sorted by author and title.

You may be surprised at how few pages it takes to print out your entire library using this approach. The report can include key information such as the format you have, signed, first edition etc. So when on a shopping trip and you come across a first edition of a favorite title in excellent condition, you can easily tell if you have it, if you only have a paperback edition etc. All the information you need to make a purchase decision at your fingertips.

Cataloging video games with ReaderwareVW

Cataloging video games with ReaderwareVW

If you are looking for a way to catalog video games, ReaderwareVW the video version of Readerware can now auto-catalog them from Amazon.

There is nothing special you need to do, just select Amazon from the site list and scan the barcode or enter the UPC of a video game into ReaderwareVW auto-catalog. ReaderwareVW will automatically update itself if needed and catalog the games for you.

The ReaderwareVW database is designed more for movies, TV shows etc., but video games fit fairly well into the database layout too. ReaderwareVW recognizes that you are cataloging video games and sets the format accordingly.

You can catalog video games into your existing video database or create a new separate database just for video games. To do this select the File->New Database menu item. Choose the location and enter the name for your new database. To switch between databases select the File->Open Database menu item.

Site news

Several new sites have been added to Readerware. These changes were pushed out from the web site automatically so you probably already have them in your auto-catalog list. If not just catalog something from another site and that will force Readerware through the site upgrade process. Restart Readerware and the new sites will appear.

Blackwell [UK] - A UK retailer. What makes this site especially useful for a lot of UK users is that Blackwell include the Dewey Decimal Number in their listings. They are the only retailer we know of that does this.

Library and Archives Canada [CA] - Canada's national collection of books and more. A great resource for Canadian users.

Fishpond [AU] - ReaderwareAW and ReaderwareVW have supported Fishpond for a while, now Australian users can catalog their books from Fishpond too.

LaserDisc Database - For video collectors who still have their LaserDisc collections.

The Folio Society - Collectors of Folio editions can now drag & drop from the Folio Society web site to catalog their books. As Folio editions do not have an ISBN you cannot auto-catalog these books, drag & drop only.

Ciao! [UK] - A UK retailer with a great music section, drag & drop only.

Don't forget that when cataloging Readerware can merge data from multiple sites to build the most complete record possible. For example Canadian users may want to catalog books from Amazon [CA] and Library and Archives Canada [CA] for the best coverage. You will find more books and will get bibliographic information from Library and Archives Canada as well as cover art, reviews etc, from Amazon.

Readerware support

There is nothing more important than answering your questions. You can always e-mail support@readerware.com and expect a reply in a couple of hours. 12 hours maximum. Unfortunately e-mail communications are not as reliable as they once were. Spam and the various schemes people have dreamed up to combat spam are interfering with normal e-mail communications.

If you have not received a response to your support request within 12 hours, something has gone wrong.
If you have not received a response within 12 hours, don't wait any longer, send a follow up e-mail. If possible try and include an alternate e-mail address. I will re-send your answer from another e-mail server to all addresses you specify.

Obviously Spam is a real problem. But it is important to realize that none of the defense mechanisms are anywhere near 100% accurate. There is nothing more frustrating for you than feeling ignored, you aren't being ignored. Every e-mail you send is answered promptly. From this end there is nothing more frustrating than taking the time to create a reply that is never seen then getting a "why aren't you responding" e-mail a couple of days later.

All support e-mail is answered within 12 hours, if you don't get that response, check your anti-spam measures and try again.

Thanks.
