The Readerware Newsletter
Welcome to The Readerware Newsletter.
Readerware 1.87
Readerware 1.87 is now available. There have been a few minor upgrades recently,
fixing some problems that users have reported:
- Improvements in Readerware support for the CueCat, scanning should
now be more reliable.
- Fixed a problem that would sometimes cause an image to be associated with
the wrong book.
- Fixed a hang when using the unlimited results display option.
- Improved keyboard navigation.
A full list of all the changes in recent releases can always be found on the web site:
Development Plans
As you have probably noticed recent Readerware releases have
been focusing on stabilizing the product and fixing problems
as we run into them. But that doesn't mean it has been
exactly quiet around here lately, far from it. Parallel
development is proceeding with the next major release of
Readerware. All the common requests for new features have
been incorporated and all will be revealed in a couple of
months.
Also I am working on some new products. You haven't been
shy in suggesting other products that could benefit from
Readerware technology and there are a number of new products
under development. It's too early to go into detail, but
look for the first new products to appear before the end of
the year.
Traffic to the Readerware web site has grown tremendously in
the last month or so and exciting times are ahead. This
seems like a good time to thank you all for your support,
your suggestions and referrals. Many of you have been
spreading the word about Readerware and I really appreciate
it, even though I had to upgrade the web site support
contract to handle all the increased traffic!
The Readerware Web Site
Talking of the Readerware web site, there have been a number
of changes there too recently.
A new book review feed has been added. You will see it on
the right hand side of the home page. The latest 10
reviews, fiction and non-fiction, are displayed and the feed
is constantly being updated. The reviews are from a variety
of sources, several different newspapers here in the US such as
The Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Washington Post etc., from The UK The
Independent, Guardian and Observer, web sites such as Salon
and many others. The review feed offers a wide variety of
reviews and opinions. Check back daily for the latest book
reviews.
A new translation link has been added. This is something of
an experiment, it is a real time automated translation
system that will allow you to view the Readerware web site
in a number of different languages. As it is an automated
translation system it will probably appear comical at times,
but hopefully serves the purpose of making the Readerware
web site more accessible to non-English speakers.
This newsletter can also be translated, see the translation banner above.
Is this service useful? Please let us know.
Another change is on the ordering page, there is now a link
to a real-time currency conversion service. Now you can
easily get an idea of how much Readerware costs in virtually
any currency using the latest exchange rates. Exchange
rates fluctuate constantly and some credit cards may use
other rates, so these conversions should only be used as a
guide.
Finally there is now an easy way to let a friend know about Readerware,
just click on the new recommend it icon in the top right hand corner of any
page. You can then send e-mail to one or more friends telling them all
about Readerware.

:CueCat Revisited
I have finally gotten to the bottom of the CueCat problems that some of you were
experiencing. So if you had problems or unreliable scans, please upgrade to
Readerware 1.87.
You may have seen recent press reports about a security breach at the CueCat web site that
revealed personal information about some CueCat customers. There have also been a number
or articles in the press regarding CueCat tracking of scans:
If you are concerned about these issues, please remember that they only apply when using the
CueCat with the software that came with the device. CueCat is able to track scans because
the device sends a unique device serial number along with the bar code you are scanning. Readerware
ignores the serial number completely and only extracts the bar code itself. Readerware never
tracks the scans you make with the CueCat.
You do not have to install the software that comes with the
CueCat to use it with Readerware. You can even use it with
Readerware for Linux, an operating system not supported by
CueCat software. If you have installed CueCat software, you can always
remove it. The CueCat will continue to function with
Readerware. Infact you must disable the CueCat software
when using Readerware. If you don't CueCat software will grab all
the data and Readerware will not receive any input. You can
disable CueCat from the CueCat icon in the Windows task bar.
Visit the CueCat web site for more information on their software capabilities
and their privacy policy.
No More Downloads!
Not exactly, but there is now one less reason to download Readerware upgrades. In the
past you may have noticed that Readerware stopped working with a particular site because
the web site in question changed their format. As a result you had to download a new
version of Readerware to work with the updated site.
No more, now Readerware will automatically upgrade itself to handle web site changes.
What happens is that the first time you extract data from a web site in a Readerware
session, Readerware checks
to see if it has the latest extraction code. If not the latest version is downloaded.
This should make the extraction process more accurate and reduce the number of downloads
you have to make.
Readerware Message Boards
Don't forget the Readerware message boards are now available on the web. You can post questions and
comments on the Readerware message boards. Get help from other Readerware users. There are topics for
most issues. Readerware support will scan the message boards and jump in with help when needed.
For example you can let people know how you find the :CueCat bar code scanner.
The new message forums do NOT replace Readerware support, you can always e-mail us at
support@readerware.com.
