128 bit Encryption Support
Up until now Readerware has supported 40 bit encryption for all users and 128 bit encryption for users
in the US and Canada. Now due to changes in U.S. Government export regulations, we can offer 128 bit
encryption support as part of the standard download. So make sure you upgrade to Readerware 1.84 for
improved 128 bit encryption support.
As a result of these changes the 128 bit encryption request form has been removed from the web site,
everyone gets 128 bit support and there is no longer any need to request the domestic version.
Even if you are already running 128 bit encryption, please be sure to download Readerware 1.84 as it
includes a new version of the encryption support libraries from Sun Microsystems Inc. This new library
incorporates some bug fixes.
Remember that with the built in encryption support in the Readerware browser you can order from your
favorite online book seller, safely and securely.
It is important to understand whether you are sending data over an open connection or a secure
connection. Normally you would not want to send sensitive information such as credit card numbers over
an open connection.
The Readerware Browser displays a padlock in the top right hand corner of the window, next to the
surfing book icon. If the padlock is open, you have an open connection. This is the normal mode that you
will see when browsing for books etc. The unlocked padlock is always blue. If the padlock is locked it
indicates you have a secure connection. It used to be that if the locked padlock was blue, you had a
global level secure connection, if it was orange you had a domestic level secure connection. Now you
will always see an orange locked padlock. Look for it, you will normally want to ensure you have a
locked padlock when placing orders etc.
Be sure to also read the security and privacy policies at the various sites.

Authentication Support
New in Readerware 1.84 is authentication support. This expands the proxy server support in Readerware,
and provides access to password protected proxy servers and web pages. Whenever authentication is
required, Readerware will prompt you for a user ID and password.
:CueCat Improvements
Many of you have picked up a :CueCat barcode scanner at Radio Shack for use with Readerware. If you
haven't heard about the :CueCat, checkout our web site or the last issue of the Readerware newsletter;
A few users are reporting some scanning problems, sometimes only part of the scanned data is received
which can cause Readerware to display an invalid ISBN message. Sometimes because of misread data, menu
short cuts would be invoked on a scan. These problems seem to be an issue on slower machines.
Improvements in Readerware 1.84 :CueCat support should hopefully eliminate or reduce these problems.
If you are experiencing problems with :CueCat scanning, here are some tips:
- Place the scanner on the book cover just before the start of the bar code.
- If possible, try to place it before the start of the barcode but within the border of the
barcode. If the cover is a different color sometimes scanning across a dark book cover onto
the white background of the bar code can confuse the scanner.
- Use a swift consistent stroke, don't vary the speed as you drag the scanner across the bar
code
- If the scan fails to register, try again. Slow down a little, but again keep a consistent
speed.
- Always scan the complete bar code, some books have what looks like two different bar codes,
but they really are part of the same barcode so scan across the entire bar code.
Miscellaneous Changes
Some bugs were fixed in this release. The problem with missing table column headers has been resolved.
The uninstall should now be working correctly, not that anyone every wanted to uninstall of course:-)
The results table should now always be refreshed after you have updated your database. Sometimes if you
update a book and then return to the results table, the old data was still displayed. This has now been
fixed, assuming you have the database refresh option on of course.
A minor new feature but a very useful one has been added to auto-catalog. A user suggested that the log
include the index on the not found ISBNs so that you can easily determine which books were not
cataloged.
