Free Bar Code Scanners at Radio Shack!
No kidding. Really! Radio Shack is giving away FREE bar code scanners. Just simply go into any one of
the 7,000 Radio Shack stores in the US and ask for the new catalog and free :CueCat scanner. You can
even order online.
For more information, visit Radio Shack or :CueCat:
So what is a :CueCat and why is Radio Shack giving them away? It is being billed as a new way to
navigate the web. The new Radio Shack catalog is full of bar codes, scan one of them with your :CueCat
and your web browser takes you to the Radio Shack web site. Cute? Perhaps. But the bottom line is that
the :CueCat is a bar code scanner.
So will it work with Readerware? It will now! The :CueCat
isn't a standard bar code scanner, the data it sends to the
PC is not the same as the data a normal industry standard bar code
scanner sends. But Readerware 1.82 adds support for the :CueCat datastream,
So go to Radio Shack,
ask for your free Radio Shack catalog and :CueCat scanner. They should be available at any one of the
7,000 Radio Shack stores nationwide. Sorry, but I don't know the availability outside the U.S.
Installing a :CueCat
It really couldn't be simpler. Follow the instructions that come with your free :CueCat scanner.
Basically:
- Power down your PC
- Unplug your keyboard from the back of your PC
- Plug the :CueCat into the keyboard socket on your PC
- Plug your keyboard into the socket on the :CueCat tail
- Power on your PC
- Upgrade to Readerware 1.82 and scan away.
Note that you do NOT have to install the software that comes with the :CueCat to use it with Readerware.
You do of course have to install the software if you want to take advantage of the other features of a
:CueCat. Be aware that the software that comes with the :CueCat tracks your usage. They are up front
about this, it's your choice. But remember, this only applies when using the :CueCat with their
software, not when you use it with Readerware.
How Good is the :CueCat?
It is not going to replace my CCD gun scanner, it's still the best. But the :CueCat is a surprisingly
good product. It is shaped like a cat with 2 red LED's shining out of its mouth. Simply line up its
paws with the bottom of the bar code and drag it across. OK so it sounds and looks pretty silly, but it
is a bar code scanner, it does work very well and it's FREE! If you don't have a bar code scanner, get a
:CueCat. A bar code scanner makes Readerware even easier to use.
Amazon
Amazon recently upgraded their web site. In case you haven't already done so you will need to upgrade to
Readerware 1.81 or greater to import data from Amazon.
