Symbol® Portable Barcode Readers

Both these scanners are serial devices. The CS-1504 comes with either a serial cable or USB cable, see below for driver information.

Mac Serial Installation

To use either model scanner with a serial cable you need a USB->Serial adapter like the Keyspan USB High Speed Serial Adapter This connects to any available USB port and provides the 9 pin PC serial connector. Follow the simple instructions and you should be able to run the Keyspan Serial Assistant application and verify that you now have a serial port on your Mac. Make a note of the port name, this is the port you will select in the Readerware Scanner Upload dialog.

Any Mac USB->Serial adapter should work.

CS-1504 Mac USB Installation

The CS-1504 is a serial device. The USB version that Symbol ships is the serial scanner with a serial to USB adapter. Symbol have used two different serial to USB adapters, they require different drivers.
USB Drivers for CS1504-I100-0001 and Cable CPN 25-50027-01
There are no Mac OS X drivers for this older model.
USB Drivers for CS 1504-I100-0002 and Cable PN 50-16000-386
This model uses the Prolific chipset. Mac OS X drivers are available from Prolific

Mac Software Installation

In order for Readerware to access the serial port on your Mac, you need to install Java serial port support (RXTX). This is a free download.

The easiest way to install RXTX is using one of the following Mac OS X installers from SourceForge:

RXTX installer for MacOS X 10.5 Leopard (Intel & PPC)
RXTX installer for MacOS X 10.2 - 10.4 (Intel)
RXTX installer for MacOS X 10.2 - 10.4 (PPC)
If the download does not begin automatically look for the "direct link" and click on that to begin your download. Once the download completes, double click on the file to decompress it. Then double click on the installer to launch the installation process. This will copy the necessary files to your system and set up RXTX support. You will be prompted for your administrator password during the install. That is it, you should now be able to access your portable barcode reader in Readerware.

RXTX is open source software. If you prefer, you can download the full package including source and Mac OS X executables from the RXTX site. Go to http://www.rxtx.org/.

Scanning

Scanning is simple, just press and hold the larger button and point the device at the barcode. A red line will be visible over the barcode. The reader will beep when it has read the code.

To use either device with Readerware, start Readerware auto-catalog. When you get to the item input page, click on the Upload button. The Readerware Scanner Upload dialog will be displayed. Select your scanner model and the port it is connected to. Click on Upload. That is all there is to it. Readerware will connect to the scanner and upload the barcodes to your Mac.

If you get a port in use error when you try and connect to the barcode reader, it normally means that the uucp folder was not created correctly. Check your installation or use the Readerware RXTX installer.

When the upload finishes click OK to close the dialog and load the barcodes directly into the auto-catalog wizard.

As always, full information is provided in the online help.
