Symbol® Portable Barcode Readers
Both these scanners are serial devices. The CS-1504 comes with either a serial cable
or USB cable. There are no USB drivers for Linux, you must get the serial version.
Important: Some users have asked if Readerware will support
the AirClicker. The answer is NO. It is unfortunate, the AirClicker is available at
a relatively low price. But it is a modified CS-1504. All data is encrypted so it is not
possible for Readerware to upload barcodes from an AirClicker.
Linux Installation
In order for Readerware to access the serial port on your Linux machine, you need to install
Java serial port support. This is a free download.
You need to download RXTX.
Go to http://www.rxtx.org/ and
click on the downloads link.
You need to download and install the version with javax.comm
support. Follow the instructions included in the download.
You will need to install the Java SDK in order to build
RXTX. The build process will update your Java runtime
directories with RXTX support. You must also read the section
on lock support and make the necessary changes to support
locking.
Once the RXTX install is complete, there is on extra step
required to use it with Readerware products. The install
updated your Java runtime, but Readerware also includes a
Java runtime. The Readerware version has not been updated.
Refer to the RXTX INSTALL document, the section on where the
files end up. You need to copy each of the files from your
Java runtime directories into the corresponding location in
your readerware/jre directory.
The file comm.jar referred to in the installation
instructions, is included in the Readerware distribution.
It is located in your readerware/lib directory. You need to
ensure it is copied to the correct location.
Scanning
Scanning is simple, just press and hold the larger button and point the device
at the barcode. A red line will be visible over the barcode. The reader will beep when it
has read the code.
To use either device with Readerware, start Readerware auto-catalog. When you get to the
item input page, click on the Upload button. The Readerware Scanner Upload
dialog will be displayed. Select your scanner model and the port it is connected to. Click
on Upload. That is all there is to it. Readerware will connect to the scanner
and upload the barcodes to your PC.
When the upload finishes click OK to close the dialog and load the barcodes
directly into the auto-catalog wizard.
As always, full information is provided in the
online help.
