Installation Instructions

All Readerware products use the Apple installer and are distributed as Zip archives. Readerware used to be distributed as Stuffit archives but beginning with Tiger, Apple have removed Stuffit support from OS X.

To install, doubleclick on the file you downloaded. This will extract the installer. Then doubleclick on the Apple installer package icon and follow the simple on screen instructions. An administrator password will be required. If you have problems unzipping these files, help is available!

By default Readerware applications are installed into your Applications folder. You have the option of changing this during the installation.

When upgrading, do not drag your current Readerware applications to the trash can. Run the installer as normal, this will update your current installation. When upgrading from Readerware 2.26 or earlier, please follow these special upgrade instructions.

If you have problems installing Readerware under Mac OS X, please contact support@readerware.com.

Important Upgrade Instructions

Please read this section if you are upgrading from Readerware 2.26 or an earlier version of Readerware.

There were a couple of problems with earlier Mac OS X distributions:

Readerware databases were named incorrectly and sometimes Readerware would not automatically open the last accessed database. This has been fixed, but Readerware may not open your database automatically the first time you start it after the upgrade from 2.26 or earlier.. Simply open the database, Readerware will then correctly remember the database name.

Prior distributions would install Readerware in the current folder. If you downloaded Readerware to your desktop and launched the installer, Readerware was installed on the desktop. New distributions will install into your Applications folder. You can override this at installation time. So you could continue to install on your desktop or install into your Applications folder and delete your old installation. Be sure to move your database before deleting your old installation.

Moving a Readerware database

A Readerware database is made up of a series of files. To copy or move a Readerware database, use the built in backup and restore feature:
Start Readerware.

Open the database you want to copy or move.

Select File->Backup Database from the Readerware menu. Enter the name and location of the backup file. Readerware will then create a single ZIP archive file containing your full database.

Select File->Restore Database from the Readerware Menu, enter the backup file you created in the previous step. You will then be prompted for the new database name and location. You can create your new database anywhere you want, in your Readerware folder, Home folder, Documents folder etc.

When the restore completes, Select File->Open Database and select the database you just created.

I am sorry for any inconvenience. Going forward, the new installer included with 2.27 and higher resolves these issues. So future upgrades will be a breeze.

Minimum System Requirements

Readerware will run on any Mac OS X capable system.
  • Mac OS X:
    • 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher
    • At least 20 MB of free disk space

For best results a screen resolution of at least 800 by 600 and more than 256 colors is recommended. As usual more memory equals better performance.

The Readerware ReadMe and the Readerware Release Notes contain additional information for all users. Both are included in the download distribution.
