Yes, you can run Readerware products using StyleTap® on a Windows Mobile®, Symbian OS™ or Pocket PC PDA or smart phone.
Currently Readerware only runs on Palm OS devices, a native version for Windows Mobile/PocketPC is in the works. Really!
In the meantime a user pointed us to StyleTap an application that lets you run any Palm OS application on Windows Mobile and Pocket PC devices.
I tested Readerware on a vintage Compaq iPaq 3135 made around 2000. I found that Readerware not only ran on this device but it ran very well. Not as fast as on my Palm but performance was very good. Installing StyleTap and Readerware was a breeze. In a matter of minutes you could be running Readerware on your Windows PDA or smart phone.
StyleTap is available for a free 14 day trial after that a StyleTap license costs $49.95. That may sound a lot but remember this will let you run all three Readerware applications on your Palm and any other Palm applications you have.
You will need Readerware Palm support also to transfer your databases to your Windows device. If you are using the trial version of Readerware you can try all this out during your trial. If you already have a standard edition license you can request a temporary key so that you can try Readerware out on your Windows device before you buy.
If you already have Readerware Palm Edition or Readerware Client/Server Edition you already have the necessary Readerware license. An upgrade from Readerware Standard Edition to the equivalent Palm version is $15, this covers all your existing products. For example if you currently have Readerware Standard Edition Bundle, $15 gets you Readerware Palm Edition Bundle, all three products for your desktop and Palm.
Now the fun part, here is how you install StyleTap and Readerware on your Windows Mobile or PocketPC device:
- Download StyleTap.
- Run the StyleTap installer, this will install StyleTap on both your desktop and mobile device.
- Download Readerware and decompress the files into a temporary folder.
- Run the StyleTap App Installer from the Windows Start menu. Click On Add, go to the folder where you stored the Readerware applications and select all the files shown. Click Install to Device.
Now both StyleTap and the Readerware applications are on your device. You can go to the Programs folder and launch all of the Readerware applications. At this point the application will just run, there is no data, but you will have verified the install and have Readerware running on your device.
The final step is to create your Readerware Palm databases as any Palm user would. Run the StyleTap App Installer again and this time select the Readerware database files you just created. You will need to go through this step each time you want to update your Readerware databases on your Windows device.
Start the Readerware applications again and you should see your data and be able to use the applications just as you would on a real Palm device.
There are two ways to launch Readerware on your Windows device. You can go to the Programs folder and click on the appropriate Readerware application icon. Or you can run the StyleTap launcher application. This shows all available Palm applications on a separate screen and you can launch Readerware from there.
There was just one minor issue I noticed. If you display the keyboard to enter information into the Readerware search dialog, the Readerware window is pushed off the top of the screen hiding the navigation controls. So after completing a search you must hide the keyboard again if you need to access the Readerware navigation buttons.
I was very impressed, StyleTap ran all Readerware applications very well and the installation process was very smooth.
